VOUS AVEZ TRAVAILLÉ AVEC ALEXANDER MCQUEEN PENDANT 2 ANS, QUEL ÉTAIT VOTRE RESPONSABILITÉ CHEZ LUI? j'ai commencé mon stage chez McQueen à mi-temps à l'âge de 19 ans, en alternant avec le travail et les études, mais j'ai trouvé que l'expérience tant de valeur que j'ai quitté le cours dans lequel je m'étais inscrite à Middlesex pour pouvoir faire un temps plein à l'occasion de la deuxième et troisième saison. C'était une très bonne expérience. Puis j'ai fait la quatrième saison à mi-temps, car j'avais compris ce que je voulais réaliser, et j'ai créé ma première collection que j'ai exposée dans une galerie en Janvier 2004.

VOUS AVEZ COLLABORÉ AVEC GARETH PUGH POUR SA COLLECTION AUTOMNE-HIVER 2007/2008, COMMENT L'AVEZ VOUS RENCONTRÉ? J'ai répondu à un message Myspace de Gareth qui cherchait des gens pour l'assister à cette époque. Je suis allée à son studio, je l'ai rencontré et lui ai montré mon portfolio, comme d'habitude!

QUEL ÉTAIT VOTRE TRAVAIL AU SEIN DE SON ÉQUIPE? CELA VOUS-A-T-IL PLU? Mon rôle était de réaliser l'idée que Gareth avait de créer de vêtement en utilisant des triangles, des formes dans des formes pour créer des motifs basés sur cette idée, en opposition aux techniques de drapé ou de constructions en blocs. C'était un processus excitant. Gareth a une vision forte en termes de design et de réalisation. C'était un plaisir de travailler avec lui et son équipe. Je n'ai pas seulement apprécié l'expérience, cela m'a aussi donné la confiance pour commencer ma propre société et croire en ma propre vision.

COMMENT DÉFINIRIEZ-VOUS VOTRE VISION EN UNE PHRASE? ma vision est de créer des formes élégantes très fortes en ayant une approche éthique et écologique.

QUEL EST LE THÈME DE VOTRE DERNIÈRE COLLECTION? Pour ma collection de diplôme l'inspiration était les Boston Red Sox (équipe de Base-Ball NDLR), The Patriots (équipe de football américain) et aussi du mobilier sexy des années 70... pour ma dernière collection mon inspiration était similaire mais en plus avec une exploration de lignes traversant une forme tridimensionnelle, et des chapeaux de lampes fabuleux...

QUELLE A ÉTÉ LA PHASE LA PLUS DIFFICILE DANS LA RÉALISATION DE VOTRE COLLECTION? Tout est difficile si vous le rendez difficile. Trouver les fonds est toujours un challenge mais je crois vraiment qu'il n'est pas important de focaliser sur ce qui est le plus dur mais d'apprécier tout ce qui est possible et ne pas se donner d'excuses. Tout ce qui vaut le coup demande de la détermination et beaucoup de travail.

COMBIEN DE GENS SONT INTERVENUS DANS CETTE COLLECTION? (rires) Waouh... c'est une grande question. Et bien d'abord il y a eu les fermiers qui ont fait pousser le coton organique, le chanvre et le bambou ou les arbres des forêts renouvelables, et les vers à soie ... mais je vais surtout profiter de cette question pour remercier mes assistants Cyn, Louis, Lawrence, Timothy et Chris. Mes amis et ma famille sont aussi très positifs.

COMBIEN DE COLLECTIONS AVEZ-VOUS RÉALISÉ AVANT CELLE-CI? Avant de créer ma collection Emergence j'en ai conçu et réalisé cinq ou six mais pour des ventes privées, le fun et l'expérience.

COMMENT TRAVAILLEZ D'HABITUDE POUR LA CREATION D'UNE COLLECTION? Je mets un album de Kylie et commence à travailler! Comme je viens juste de commencer il n'y a pas encore d'habitudes à ce sujet et j'espère qu'il n'y en aura pas à part pour la logistique.

COMMENT CONSIDÉREZ-VOUS LA MODE ÉTHIQUE? POUVEZ-VOUS NOUS EN DIRE PLUS SUR LA FAçON DONT VOUS VOYEZ L'INDUSTRIE DE LA MODE ÉVOLUER DANS LES 5 PROCHAINES ANNÉES? le design éthique est l'opportunité que nous avons en tant qu'humanité de s'adapter au monde naturel qui est en plein changement. Nous expérimentons des climats de plus en plus extrêmes, des bouleversements dans les saisons et le niveau de la mer monte. Nous devons faire face à ce que l'industrialisation humaine a fait à notre planète et penser à notre évolution et à notre co-existence avec la nature. Ma propre manière de réagir est de réaliser une mode éthique, renouvelable et beaucoup de gens dans l'industrie de la mode et dans l'agro-alimentaire pensent la même chose.

VOUS ÊTES ÉGALEMENT ILLUSTRATRICE, Où POUVONS NOUS VOIR VOTRE TRAVAIL? Il y a un nouveau travail dans la prochaine édition de Gazelland magazine en Novembre, une sorte d'autoportrait ... c'est une petite incursion dans Ada Land!

QUI EST VOTRE CRÉATEUR FAVORI? Le premier créateur dont j'ai connu le nom et dont j'ai reconnu le travail à l'âge de 6 ou 7 ans est Azzedine Alaïa. Je suis tombé amoureuse de pratiquement tout ce qu'il a fait pendant presque 20 ans. En ce moment je suis aussi très impressionnée et je respecte le travail de Louise Goldin. Elle est visionnaire et la réalisation est incroyable.

VOTRE CRÉATEUR FAVORI MÉCONNU? Stefan Orschel-Read pour son vestiaire masculin spectaculalre raffiné et William Tempest (finaliste de fashion Fringe, donc pas vraiment inconnu) pour sa mode féminine sexy et très bien coupée.

VOTRE NOUVEAU MORCEAU DE MUSIQUE PRÉFÉRÉ : Bishi – Never seen your face. Les arrangements qu'elle a réalisé pendant le Jonathan Ross Show étaient fantastiques!

VOTRE ARTISTE FAVORI : Anish Kapoor - Son travail dit tout pour moi.

LA PROCHAINE IDÉE SUR LAQUELLE VOUS ALLEZ TRAVAILLER : je ne peux pas trop en dire... mais je pense qu'il est temps d'amener mes illustrations dans ma mode et vice-versa, il est temps qu'ils soient présentés l'un à l'autre.

ET ENSUITE? Je fais un show en Chine grâce à l'agence Artstalker et Intime le 12 Novembre. Les détails seront sur le site bientôt. Je vais également montrer 2 ou 3 fois mon travail à Londres, pour Before Encore 3 Finale pour l'évènement de John Lee Birds, il a créé une superbe peinture de moi. YOU WORKED WITH ALEXANDER MCQUEEN FOR 2 YEARS, WHAT WAS YOUR POSITION THERE? I began my work placement at McQueen part time at the age of 19 , balancing that with college and work but found the experience to be so valuable that I left the degree I had started at Middlesex to make my placement full time for the second and third season. It was a great experience. The fourth season I did part time as by then I had formed my own ideas of things that I wished to realise and made my own first collection which I exhibited at a gallery in January 2004.

YOU COLLABORATED WITH GARETH PUGH FOR HIS 2007/2008 WINTER COLLECTION, HOW DID YOU MEET HIM? I responded to a message Gareth put on myspace looking for people to assist with that season. I went to his studio and met him, showed him my portfolio, the usual!

WHAT WAS YOUR PART IN HIS TEAM? DID YOU ENJOY IT?My role was to realise the concept Gareth had for creating garments made using triangles, shapes within shapes to create patterns based on this concept as opposed to drafting from blocks or draping. It was an exciting process. Gareth has a very strong vision both in terms of design and realisation. It was a pleasure to work with him and his team. I not only enjoyed the experience but it gave me the confidence to begin my own company and believe in my own vision.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE YOUR DESIGN VISION IN ONE SENTENCE? My design vision is to create really strong elegant forms using a sustainable/eco conscious work ethic.

WHAT IS THE THEME OF YOUR LAST COLLECTION? For my graduate collection the inspiration was the Boston Red Sox, The Patriots (American football team) and some really sexy sleek 70’s furniture.... For the current collection my inspiration was similar but with more of an exploration of lines travelling across a 3d form and some really fabulous lampshades.....

WHAT WAS THE HARDEST PART FOR THE MAKING OF YOUR COLLECTION? Everything is as hard as you make it. Funding is always the most challenging but I really believe that its not important to focus on what is hardest but to appreciate all the things that are possible and not to make excuses. Anything that’s worth having requires hard work and determination.

HOW MANY PEOPLE GOT INVOLVED IN THIS COLLECTION?'' Lol! Wow............ that’s a big question. Well........ first in the process there are the farmers who grow the organic cotton, hemp and the bamboo or the trees in sustainable forests and the silk worms...... but crucially I will use this question to say a big thank you to my interns, Cyn, Louis, Lawrence, Timothy and Chris. My friends and family are incredibly supportive also.''

HOW MANY COLLECTIONS DID YOU DESIGN BEFORE THIS ONE? Before designing my current collection Emergence I had designed and realised five or six collections but for private sales, fun and experience.

HOW DO YOU USUALLY WORK FOR THE CREATION OF A COLLECTION? I put on a Kylie album and get down to work! As I’ve only just begun there’s not much usual about it and really I hope there won’t be other than the logistics.

YOU ARE SHOWING YOUR COLLECTION IN PARIS DURING THE ETHICAL FASHION SHOW HELD AT CARROUSEL DU LOUVRE IN PARIS FROM 9TH TO 12TH OF OCTOBER, CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT? HOW DO YOU CONSIDER ETHICAL FASHION? CAN YOU TELL US MORE ON HOW YOU SEE THE FASHION INDUSTRY EVOLVING FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS? Ethical Design is the opportunity we have now as a humanity to adapt to the natural world which is changing. We are experiencing more dramatic weather patterns, seasonal changes and the sea level is rising. We must face up to what human industrialisation has done to our planet and work out how we will continue to be and co-exist. My personal way is through ethically and sustainably made fashion design and many in the fashion industry just as in the food industry are thinking the same.

YOU ARE ALSO AN ILLUSTRATOR, WHERE CAN YOUR ILLUSTRATIONS BE SEEN ? There is a new work coming out in the next issue of Gazelleland magazine in November, a self portrait ... of sorts.......... it’s a little peak into Ada Land!

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER ? The first designer whose name I knew and whose work I recognized though from when I was six or seven, is Azzedine Alaia. I’ve been in love with almost everything he does for nearly twenty years now... Presently I am also really impressed and respect the work of Louise Goldin. She’s got a great vision and the realisation is amazing.

YOUR FAVOURITE TOTALLY UNKNOWN DESIGNER : Stefan Orschel-Read for his spectacular and refined menswear and William Tempest (fashion fringe finalist so technically not unknown) for his incredibly well cut and sexy women’s wear.

YOUR FAVOURITE BRAND NEW TUNE : Bishi – Never seen your face. The arrangement she played of it on Jonathan Ross Show was fantastic!

YOUR FAVOURITE ARTIST : Anish Kapoor - His work says everything to me.

THE NEXT IDEA YOU ARE GOING TO WORK ON : That would be telling....... but I feel it is time to bring my illustration into my fashion and vice versa – its time they got formally introduced.

WHAT'S NEXT ? I’m showing in China thanks to ArtStalker agency and Intime in November 12th. Details to go up on the website soon. I will also be doing two or three shows in London, for Before Encore 3 Finale for John Lee Birds’ event , he has created a fabulous painting of me. I am through to the final round of a sustainable design competition by LCF for which there will be a show on October 27th invitation only, being judged by Colin McDowell and Adilli.com. Also Robert Masciave will be showing off some of the collection for his show, creating amazing hair design on the 20th. Meantime back at the studio onwards and upwards with Autumn Winter 09/10!
